If you have fleas you sure want to rid yourself of them as these are certainly pesky pests. Remember that fleas need blood from an animal to survive. If they can't feed off the blood of your pet then they can't lay more eggs and then they die, so we need to make certain the pet is protected against these pesky pests.

Bathing your pets with a flea shampoo may kill off a few of the fleas, but don't try the family shampoo as its too harsh for them. Always rinse the pet very carefully and thoroughly after using the flea shampoo. Sometimes you will see fleas just jump off, please be sure to dispose of them as you might remove them or see them jump off.

Even though you have bathed your pet new fleas are ready to get on your pet. Daily try to search your pet's fur for fleas by combing thru the fur and then deposit the fleas in a solution of water and dish soap. Some combs are made especially for fleas, check with your vet for the correct one.

This practice not only removes fleas but your pet loves this attention and care and will feel great afterwards.

Be sure to wash the bedding of your pet at least every week or so as fleas live in this bedding and be sure to keep your floors clean also as fleas can live in carpet and also on just floors.

I have used cedar chips in my pet's bedding and also had some success with eliminating fleas. Fleas just don't care for the smell of cedar chips and I also change these every few weeks.

Try putting some chopped finely pieces of garlic in your pet's food as this repels fleas from the skin of the pet. Fleas don't like the smell of garlic in the blood of the pet. Most pets will eat the garlic if chopped fine, in fact it enhances the taste of the pet food as it does human food.

You might also put a little brewer's yeast in your pet's food as it will enhance the resistance in your animals skin to resist those pesky fleas. Plus yeast is healthy for your pet as it is rich in B-vitamins.

You might try a little borax power over the bedding area and around the house sprinkled on the floors, this repels roaches, so why not fleas. It will not harm your pet. Don't put the borax on your furniture as it could discolor your upholstery.

You might try putting some eucalyptus leaves inside your pet's bedding or even Eucalyptus citriodoa (lemon gum) as this gives your house a lemon scent and also will rid the dog of fleas. Lemon smells are always delightful in the home.

There is a herbal product called Insect Shooo, which is a mixture of citrus, eucalyptus, citronella and bay leaves, this can be sprayed onto the collar or the bedding of your pet and fleas will be repelled. Check with your local vet to see what new products he might suggest to get rid of those pesky fleas if these ideas don't get rid of all of them.
